Employee Retention Survey 2008

TalentDrain are proud to share the results of the Employee Retention Survey 2008. Building on the results gathered during the Employee Retention Survey 2006 we examine the impact of staff turnover on organisational performance, HR’s attitude towards retention, the interventions and approaches adopted and the use of exit interview. Based on responses from 316 organisations and split by organisational size and industry sector, the findings provide an engaging picture of the main retention issues facing HR practitioners today.

Three key themes emerged from the analysis:

  1. Lack of ownership of employee engagement and retention – 75% of organisations have no strategy or budget for employee retention.
  2. HR do not fully understand why employees leave – when we compared the views of HR with leaver data collected from anonymous exit questionnaires, there were clear differences in opinion about the underlying drivers of turnover.
  3. Unreliable exit data is preventing HR from understanding the real reasons people leave – with only 4% of respondents using anonymous exit questionnaires the exit interview is being treated as a check-box process rather than a strategic opportunity for an organisation to understand the key turnover drivers.
